I know that all high schools aren’t like this, but I need to remember that sometimes & not write off teaching high school all together. I just feel discouraged. I feel like I’m fighting an uphill battle right now.

Coming into this, I knew that some kids would think that art was a “blow-off”, but what’s really discouraging is that the kids that are really interested are discouraged too because her lessons can sometimes being really constrictive. I hear so many kids saying things like, “No matter what she’s going to fail me anyway” & “She drew that & I don’t like it, but she’ll be angry if I erase it”. It’s hard coming into another teacher’s classroom.

Also, I can’t deny that I love little kids & had the best time ever teaching there. In comparison, this is really bad. I need to start thinking positively. Thanks for listening to my rant.

Hang in there Sarah! High school kids take a long time to get used to. They are quite rude, moody and lazy. They often speak without any thought. Especially in the art room, they tend to feel a bit more laid back. My students like to talk about incredibly inappropriate things (drugs, sex, drinking, etc.) They expect art to be easy and the teacher to not care. i don’t really know where they got these ideas of art room behavior. I did my student teaching at Northview and am spending my first year there and i am just now starting to get used to how they operate. I don’t really know if i am doing it right though. My only advice would be to hang in there and get to know them. Once you know their personalities and habits, they start to grow on you.

And on that teacher you are with, (I had her in high school) do your thing! when it comes time to take over the controls, let them know that you expect them to follow her rules but that you also have rules of your own that you expect them to follow. I remember her drawing on my pictures back then and it drove me nuts. Just be yourself and teach your way! You’ll be great and they will soon fall in love with you! (and you with them!)
